Standard full renovation

$15,000-$35,000

The headline band for a full strip-out renovation of a standard bathroom (hipages; Service.com.au puts the range most people budget for at $15,000-$30,000). The HIA Kitchens & Bathrooms Report 2025 puts the national average actual spend at $26,747 - actuals include layout changes, baths and premium selections that a layout-kept estimate may exclude.

Cosmetic / budget

$8,000-$15,000

Like-for-like refresh with the layout unchanged (hipages via Canstar and Savings.com.au). A simple renovation of a small bathroom or ensuite also lands at $10,000-$15,000 (Service.com.au).

Premium and luxury

$35,000-$60,000+

Premium renovations run $35,000-$60,000, and luxury custom work $60,000 and up - usually defined by layout changes, relocations and high-end fixtures (Canstar / Three Birds; CAP Bathrooms).

Moving plumbing is the #1 driver

Shifting a toilet, shower or bath adds $1,500-$5,000 or more (Service.com.au). Keeping every fixture where it is, is the single biggest saving in a bathroom renovation.

Fixtures swing the budget

A vanity runs $300-$700 at budget tier and $3,000-$6,000+ custom; a bath $300-$800 acrylic or $3,000-$8,000+ in stone or cast iron (Service.com.au fixture table).

Small rooms are not cheap rooms

The same trades still visit and the same waterproofing rules apply, so cost per m² falls as rooms get bigger: $2,300-$4,600/m² is the hipages cross-check band for typical rooms.

Waterproofing must comply with the National Construction Code / AS 3740, and in NSW and Queensland waterproofers must be licensed - in Queensland it is a dedicated QBCC licence class. Get the waterproofing certificate on completion. Full detail in the guide.
